Botswana Stock Exchange Limited (BSEL) is Botswana’s sole stock exchange.
Given the responsibility to operate and regulate the securities market in Botswana. The formation of the BSE can be traced back to 1989 when it was then known as Botswana Share Market (BSM). At that time there was no formal stock exchange in Botswana and the BSM traded as an informal market. At the time, there were only 5 listed entities with a single brooking firm.
The BSEL continues to be pivotal to Botswana’s financial system, and in particular the capital market, as an avenue on which government, quasi- government and the private sector can raise capital. The BSEL plays host to the most pre-eminent companies doing business in Botswana, Africa and the world at large. These companies represent a spectrum of industries and commerce; being Banking, Financial Services, Wholesaling & Retailing, Tourism, Energy, Mining & Materials, Property & Trust, Security and Telecommunications.
There are 33 listed companies on the BSE which comprise of 24 domestic companies and 9 foreign companies. Further, the BSEL has 45 listed bonds and 4 Exchange Traded Funds.
